Lagos airport

Originally known as Lagos International Airport until the mid-1970s when it was renamed after Nigeria’s 4th Military ruler Murtala Muhammed. Murtala International Airport (MMIA) is located in Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeria. It is the major airport serving Lagos State and was built during World War II. The newly constructed international terminal modeled after Amsterdam Airport Schipol was officially opened on 15, March 1979.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport consists of an international and a domestic terminal, both sharing the same runway. The domestic terminal operates at the old Ikeja Airport, while the international operations moved to the new international airport after completion. Due to the fire incident of 2000 in the old Ikeja airport, a new, privately funded domestic terminal called MMA2 was constructed and commissioned on April 7, 2007.

The airport houses the headquarters of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the head office of the Accident Investigation Bureau and the Lagos office of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). There are several restaurants and duty-free stores where travelers can eat and shop while waiting for departure time. Also, Bureau de Change offices are within the airport offering currency exchange to foreign and local travelers.
